tried that to no avail.

the problem is solved though. i just configged the kernel to use only
modules (except for the fs stuff for the root partition) and the system went
down to 412 bytes. presto.

thanks for helping, though.

I have a RH 5.2 version with modifications- kernel 2.2.6.

When I read the installation manual online, it says upgrading over RH
linux will work but I might lose mandrake's 'extra' features.

Does anyone have an opinion ? I really want to give mandrake a try.

I am trying to obtain a copy of a program called PGPA which plots
functions of one variable but with multiple parameters which can be
varied interactively.

I saw it listed on the scientific applications for linux web page
(entry at http://SAL.KachinaTech.COM/A/0/PGPA.html) and it gives a
link to download the software from geocities at

  http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/5277/pgpa.html

but unfortunately the link doesn't work.

I did a web search and came up with this page

  http://temp.redhat.com/linux-info/gtk/gtk-list/1997-October/0088.html

which suggests that the software is by Pavel Greenfield, but I haven't been
able to locate his new web page, if he has one, and I don't know if his
email address works.

Does anyone know where I can get this program (or one with similar
functionality)?

Good recipe for trouble. You want Mandrake -- save all your critical
files, wipe your disk and install Mandrake. Or put Mandrake on a
different drive or partition.

Hai,

I was running Redhat 6.0 with the 2.2.5-15 kernel that comes with it.
However I decided to compile a custom kernel. I downloaded some
patches and compiled the 2.2.9 kernel.

I am using the linux box for IP Masquarading and I use the ipchains tool
to built the firewall and the ipmasqadm to put holes in the firewall....
(makes sense?) and forward some ports to internal machines.

So, after compiling and copying the kernel and system.map to the right dir
(/boot/)
I rebooted and after booting the ip_masq_* modules didn't load anymore and
the ipmasqadm tool reported : 'setsockopt failed'.

At first I tought I forgot to compile in support for ipmasqadm and kernel
module
support. But I checked and they are both compiled into the kernel correctly.

HELP! What am I doing wrong? Or did redhat built-in somekind of
custom kernel lock-out protection.....duh....;-)

Yours,

Almer. S. Tigelaar.

Subject: Setting up a mail server on RH 6.0
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 12:49:24 GMT

I have setup my Linux RH 6.0 system as a DNS serevr and a DHCP server...now
I want to set it up as a mail server. I have another Linux RH 6.0
workstation and a WIN 98 workstation that I am testing with.

I have my own domain setup, and am testing with sending mail to:

1) [EMAIL PROTECTED] from any host
2) [EMAIL PROTECTED] from any host
3) [EMAIL PROTECTED] from from any host
4) user from any host

Everything works fine if I use ELM or PINE from the Linux workstation or the
Linux server.

The problem is that Netscape Messenger on the Linux server, Netscape
Messenger on the Linux workstation, and Outlook Express on the WIN98
workstation cannot establish a connection when sending and receiving mail.
Actually....it appears that all will send, but none of them will receive.

I suspect the problem is with POP3 / SMTP configuration on the RH 6.0
server. Netscape and Outlook Express want a POP3 server for incoming mail,
and a SMTP server for outgoing mail. The RH 6.0 Linuxconf tool for setting
up a mail server only uses POP for the protocol. There is no separate
incoming and separate outgoing protocol configuration, plus from the pull
downs, Linuxconf only supports POP, SMTP, or UUCP.

I want to set the mail server up so it can server any e-mail client.

Thanks.

Any ideas?

My final solution was to switch to SuSE 6.1 and return COL 2.2 to the
store where I bought it. COL 2.2 was very unstable for me.

However, I did get Kppp to work in COL 2.2 eventually, but don't
remember the exact details, since I tried a number of different things
(including clean re-installs). IIRC, one of the problems was with KDE
themes. If you chose one of the KDE themes, create a new user account
without choosing a KDE theme, and try Kppp from that user account. You
could also try updating to KDE 1.1, which seemed to help make COL 2.2
more stable (but still not very stable for Linux IMO).

Good Luck!

Try the command sosetup. If it's not in your path, you might have to
look for it using the find command in the Kmenu. This needs to be done
for each user account you plan to use staroffice in. You should
probably have an internet connection active to allow you to
interactively register staroffice once it is installed.

There are several things to try in this instance:

<alt> + <F2> (should bring up a command line in KDE; type kfm to get
KDE back)
<ctrl> + <alt> + <backspace> (should take you to the console)

In some cases, however, it appeared that Linux was not responding to the
keyboard at all because even <ctrl> + <alt> + <del> did nothing.

I had similar problems often enough that I returned COL 2.2 and went
with SuSE 6.1.

Please give me your thoughts on the following:

I wish to be able to display "Line characters" on the console (eg 0xC4,

In RedHat Ver 5,2 i did this with the following command

setfont -m /lib/ld-linux.so.1

Under RedHat Ver 6 it does'nt want to work and complains with this message

I have Mandrake 5.3 and I can shutdown my box in KDM
without any requirement that you'd be root or any
user. Once you logged out from your user account
and your KDM is on your screen you can just
shutdown the machine as you wish.
Actually, this can also be configured inside KDE
such that only root is allowed to shutdown the machine.
But as long as you haven't change the default settings,
you can easily do it with Mandrake.

Hello I am thinking of installing Linux 6.0 from Redhat but I have a few
questions frist

1. When you install the redhat version 6.0 of linux do you start of with a
gui or do have to install your own.

2. Does linux have it's own software for internet sharing.

3. If linux can't read fat 32 hard drives how can it use hard drives bigger
than 2 GB which is fat 16 limit.

4. Can I use Linux for my server where all other systems use win 98 with fat
32 hard drives.

5. Does linux support adsl or cable modems.

6. Is the Celeron Processor any good for linux.

7. Whats the difference in the inerface between the workstation and sever
versions.

8. Does the server version come with Redhat 6.0

Thanks for any help.

# vi /etc/resolv.conf

Change the nodomain.nowhere to your ISP's domain.
You also have to change 0.0.0.0 to your ISP's DNS ip
addressess. Usually you have two- the primary and
secondary. You omit the last nameserver 0.0.0.0. line.

And don't forget to save the file.

re-do the make, until the kernel has finished compiling (that's what I
