Subject: Weird colors in X and Modem Problem

First X with KDE and the Voodoo3 XFree86 X server SOMETIMES displays wierd
colors or has only a few linmes at the top of the screen. I'm running
Mandrake 6.0 which I hear is very close to RedHat 6.0. This only applies
to 16bit color modes (and up I think) not when I just type startx. I have
to restart X with startx -- -bpp 16 several time before I can get it to
work with the righjt display. If anyone could help me with this it would
help greatly.

Secoundly my modem which isn't a winmodem because it's too old (33.6) and
it has a slew of jumpers on it. I don't even know what make it is but it
works fine in Win98 (uck!) as a generic 33.6 modem. And under Linux
running X11 and KDE with kppp I get it to dial connect and it says I'm
connected at 33600 but Netscape and the KDE browser type file manager both
say that I'm not connected. I read somewhere that I need to put some info
in a conf file and that info is some what like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and I can
find it out in windows. But where? I'm obviously a newbie to Linux.
I've had it for 2 days.

I got my first computer in 1985 when I was 9. My dad bought me a ZX
Spectrum+. The first thing I did was play Hungry Horrace. Then, I took
out the manual, and ran every program in it. I started experimenting with
my own BASIC code, and soon wrote my first game. Nothing fancy. I'm now
23 and doing a Master's in Computer Applications.

I moved from the Spectrum to a PC-XT with 640KB RAM and a 20MB hard disk.
That was a lot. What amazes me most, is that running wordperfect,
prefessional write, and wordstar on that machine was faster than running
word on windows. What's even more amazing, was that the former were
written by different companies, unlike word and windows.

I first used Linux in 1996 when Slackware appeared on a magazine CD here
in India. I did not have my own machine, so was restricted to what my
friends ran. I've now got my own machine, and am a happy linux user. It
will take me time, but I'm sure I can master some portion of this
magnificient movement. Lets all give back to open source.

Outlook( Ithink is that funny msmail program?) use netscape, like text
use pine! There are others, these are my favorites. Actually Star Office
5.1 has all this built into it plus it has a wp, ss, and pp, calendar,
mail, address book, sync to palm pilot, and many other features.

As for Quicken, unfortunely, all the possibilities are still very beta.
I tried gnofin, I havve never been able to get many of the others to
even compile. On a lighter front I ran accos one of those Mac emulation
packages that work really well and they were giving away quicken for
the mac. That way you can play mac games while using quicken.

I also had this problem. I removed myy .gnome directory, deleted the core file
in my home directory and upgraded to the latest lib, ccore files. The ccore
appears periodically but seems to work ok now.

I finally got dhclient to run. The notes/docs "recommend" selecting
"Optimize for Router" when selecting Socket Filter for dhcpd for speed and
performance, doesn't say you must. Well I didn't, and kept getting "socket:
Procedure Failed - CONFIG_FILTER and CONFIG_PACKET not in kernel" when
running dhclient to get IP address.. I checked the .config flags and they
were set =y. After 4 days playing/building, finallly (on a whim) set
"Optimize for Router". Guess what, it now works. Appears "recommend" is the
wrong prase.

Jayan,

Here's a better picture: I know the dev/ is set right, because the light
blinks when I tell it to mount, and I can format floppies with Kfloppy. The
thing is, mandrake supposedly came with something that lets it auto-detect
the file system. But if I leave it on auto, it can't read anything. If I set
it to ext2, it can't read anything (including things like the boot disk).
But (disgusting), if I set it to MSDOS, I can read dos floppies! Strange,
huh?
BTW, I'm using linuxconf to make these changes.
To whom it may concern: I got Kppp working? Having trouble with both
Netscape's and K's mail and news programs, though.

Thanks,

Subject: Odd ld & Make error
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 23:11:40 GMT

I am attempting to create a shared library using ld and am running to an very
odd error when I use ld in conjunction w/ make.

Basically, when make calls ld (or gcc) tell me that I have a multiple
definition of various functions in the object file and that it is first
defined at the very location that is causing the error (see output below).

However, if I call ld (or gcc) w/o the help of make, it works fine.

Also, this only occurs with one specific file -- if I remove the file that's
causing problems from my Makefile, it works fine.

I stared at the object file w/ objdump and nm and really couldn't tell that
anything wierd was going on. But I could be missing something, of course.

Here's the output of make.

ld -shared instruction-branch.o instruction-load.o instruction-math.o

That seems to explain why you CAN put the boot loader in the swap
partition, but what I'm wondering is why you would WANT to. Can you
think of any advantage to setting things up this way?

<DISCLAIMER>I am not a networking expert</DISCLAIMER>

Do you need a default gateway if you are only configuring one interface?
There shouldn't be much confusion about where to send packets if there's
just the ethernet. If you're trying to configure a ppp interface, then
just add the "defaultroute" option to the pppd command line.

The Networking HOWTO can be found at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/ and has
recently been updated. Have a look in there and I'm sure you'll find
helpful information.

Cheers!

Syd.
