Your question is not worded very well. It appears that you have
installed win 98 and linux on the same machine. This suggests a dual
boot. If that's the case, and windows has suddenly slowed down, it
may be that you have not left enough free space for virtual memory for
windows.

If that's not the case, you need to be more precise in your
description of what you have installed and how you have installed it.

The main reason why it's not a good idea is that, even tho you might be
sitting at the login prompt, this doesn't necessarily mean that all file
writes have been saved to disk before you cut the power. Shutting down the
machine in an orderly fashion insures that all caches are flushed before
the OS goes away.

shutdown -h now
halt
reboot <- this command of coause does what it says
poweroff or was it power off <- for atx casings you have to compile APM

Hi

I've been trying but failing to get 8.1.5 (downloaded as an ISO image
then burnt onto cdrom) to install onto linux. I get the following error
when I run the installer:

Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre. Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
: Bad address

I've done everything mentioned in the installation notes (created the dba, oinstall
groups, set up enviroment vars etc) but i still keep getting this error.
I'm using Slackware 7, kernel 2.2.14 with jre 1.1.6v5 and glibc 2.1.

Can anyone suggest whats wrong because I'm getting rather frustrated?

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know of other webcams (not parallel port ones) which have

Mandrake is also optimised for Pentiums, AFAIK Redhat will even run on
a 386. But IMHO Mandrake is easy to install, although the package
selector is a pain. It's compatible with Redhat, I've never encountered
any problems.

Note: I said partition table not partition.

I've gpt a hard drive where the partition table
has been blanked, with some medium important information
on it ( if it's gone I'm not going to cry, but it would be nice to get
it back ).

Is there any way of fixing the partition table?
( A simple example that I can think of is to run fdisk
and create a partition starting at x. Try to mount that partition.
If I fail to mount then repeat for x+1, untill I find a bunch of
starting blocks that work. Then copy data and repartition drive.
Is there a program that does this automatically? )

I've just got a modem that works under linux, so now there's no reason

Is there a tool that can convert from .pst to a standard unix format

Subject: fstab mount options for zip drive
Date: 30 Apr 2000 12:06:20 GMT

Hello,
I've been working on this all night, and I'm sure if I had a little bit of
particular knowledge, I'd be able to solve this, but as it is, I don't know that
knowledge yet. I've been trying to allow the console user to be able to mount
and unmount zip disks, instead of only root. However, I don't want just any
user to be able to mount them.
The fstab options which seem to be what I want, and work for the cdrom and
floppy disk is as follows: (i'll include the floppy fstab entry I have that
works, and the zip drive entries I'd like to work)

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
/dev/sda4 /mnt/zipdos vfat noauto,owner 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/zip ext2 noauto,owner 0 0

I tried simply entering these but to no effect. I then read the fstab man which
led me to the mount man, and in the mount man, I found the following pertinent
information:

The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the
user must be the owner of the special file. This may be useful e.g. for
/dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device.

This seems simple enough to apply to the zip drive, except that I have no idea
where to find the login script that is making the console user owner of the
cdrom and floppy so that I can add the zip drive in there as well.
Please help if you can, I've been working way too long on trying to solve this
when I'm sure I'm being silly for not knowing where to find the login script.
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

Subject: Re: Difference between Mandrake 7.0 and RedHat 6.2
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 12:30:03 GMT

The most differences between redhat 6.2 and mandrake 7.0, as I see, since I
use both of them now:
1. The installation wizard is differenet. RedHat 6.2 uses an installation
wizard similar to LiZard (Linux Wizard) that came with cladera (>= 2.2) but
built with the beautiful gtk+ library (written in C language), beside
mandrake 7.0 which uses different look and feel installation.
2. Mandrake installation process is longer than RedHat (RedHat 6.2
installation is preferred for linux newbies). Mandrake does not allow u to
select indiviual packages which RedHat allow.
3. Number of packages that bundled with the downloadable CD of mandrake is
much more than the packages come with redhat downloadable CD.
4. Mandrake is optimized for kde (users). It uses kdm as login manager and
kde as the default desktop, it has many kde programs that redhat does not
have, like KLYx, ...
5. Both uses GUI installation.
6. I perosnally see redhat 6.2 runs faster than mandrake 7.0 -I have both
on machine-.
7. And there are much more than these points which I've written.

there was another crontab in /etc/crontab which I deleted !!

Can be done. Shouldn't be any detrimental side effects (assuming you
keep the uid as 0). However, it is a bit of a waste of time, being
security through obscurity and whatnot (many canned exploits create a
user (e.g. rewt) with a uid of 0 during the crack of a box.)
