Did you try 'killall gpm' first? I haven't run q2 since RH 5.2 (that
drive is not in my computer at the moment), but a PS2 mouse worked
 fine
with a 3dfx Monster 3D. I used my Glidepad for aiming.

 scripts?

Because it's a *SECURITY RISK*!

There's a race condition when you're executing a shell script. If
you had a SUID script, things would happen kind of like so:
 (warning,
I could be completely off base on the details here!)

First, the shell assumes root privileges. Then it does a fork(),
 creating
a subshell in which the script will run. The child process retains
 root
privileges and executes the script. The parent process sets its UID
 and
GID back to normal. There is a small (but exploitable) window in
 which
the child process has root priviliges, but it hasn't started
 executing the
script yet. A clever person could potentially replace the script
 with an
arbitrary series of commands, leading to much evil.

Shell scripts are also vulnerable to buffer overruns.

The thing to do if you really really need a SUID script is to make a
 C
wrapper like so and chmod +s it:

#include <unistd.h>
int main(int argc, char **argv, char **envp)
{ execve("/path/to/script",argc,argv,envp); }

You can obtain the driver from the gimp-print project's website at
gimp-print.sourceforge.net (this link is on the stp driver page at
linuxprinting.org). Note that it is a somewhat nontrivial exercise
 to
recompile a driver into Ghostscript; with any luck at all the
gimp-print people offer RPMs or the like.

Once you have the driver itself installed, you'll need to make your
printing system use it. For Red Hat, this usually involves a minor
tweak to the printer database file used by printtool; someone on the
gimp-print mailing list can undoubtedly help you muddle through that
 -
consult the archives on sourceforge.

Quite. I now recommend printers from the Epson Stylus line; these
 are
quite well supported by the gimp-print project's Ghostscript driver.
They aren't "perfect" by my standards, but they're darned close, and
can be expected to reach perfection in the near future.

See my database, and the gimp-print/stp project's webpage, for
details. http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=stp

More generally, you may see my listing of perfectly supported color
inkjets at http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?predef=CJ

Hey! I finally got my a modem to work and connect with my Internet
Server after using the following line

setserial /dev/ttyS2 auto_irq autoconfig

It then seems to dial fine after putting a # sign in front of auth on
the /etc/ppp/options(i think correct path). Now after I connect and
it logs in I am unable to use Netscape, telnet, or anything else. It
seems like I'm not connected at all. I tried pinging, telnet, etc,
etc, on many sites. I also used another account besides root since I
read Corel disables Internet browsing with the root account. Any
 help
would be great. I also am curious as how to make the setserial line
above load up every time? I think I edit the /etc/rc.boot/0setserial
but I'm not sure if that is correct, and what to edit. Any help
 would
be great! Thanks! Take Care. Paul

Yet another option is to run a local lightweight newsserver. I'm
running Leafnode on my box over a 56K dialup line. Even with a few
heavy-traffic groups (such as comp.os.linux.misc), it tends to clear
pretty quickly. I run updates once an hour -- not quite realtime,
 but
good enough for gov't work. Doesn't tend to bog my other net traffic
either.

It helps to have a couple of phone lines to do this <g>.

Interesting, haven't seen that before.

What sort of filesystem do you have on /dev/hdd2? Output from
 'mount'?

Does the filesystem check out ok with fsck?

Try it with just

C:\linux\loadlin.exe C:\linux\vmlinuz (etc.)

And of course, you need to have the vmlinuz file (i.e. the kernel
image) in C:\linux . If that is the case and it still boots into
 Win98,
then possibly your loadlin.exe file is damaged.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a 13 GB hdd on a quite old computer which bios only recognizes
7.8GB. As soon as I have a partition over 7.8 gb allocated, I can't
install linux (suse and red hat). the strange thing is, that red hat
recognizes all partitions correctly but if I want to partition with
fdisk, the pc hangs. When partitioning with partition magic in
 winnt4.0
and then mounting the linux partitions in the redhat install routine
 and
pressing next causes again the pc to hang. I know, that some "old"
or os which call the bios for the size of the hdd have problems
installing onto a hdd > 8GB (like win9x, winnt4.0 prior sp4 or os/2).
 is
there a way to solve this problem. I don't want to throw away all the
data over the 8gb (Beos and win2k caused no problem at all when
installing). I fussed around almost half a day with OS/2 warp 4 and
ended up with a second hdd and a primary partition. I really don't
 want
to have to do this with linux too. so please reply, hopefully there
 is a
way,

Trying to make jpilot work in SuSE, I have installed the 'plink'
package, which is extravagantly described as a really cool package to
synchronise with your Palm pilot. Well, it isn't.
However I do prefer SuSE over Red Hat, although on RH making
 pilot-link
work is a no-brainer.
When I try to sync my palm device via jpilot, I get an error message:

pi_bind Input/output error
Check your serial port and settings.
I have searched the files in the plink package but cannot find any
reference to pi-bind.
I have placed a symlink in /dev linking /dev/pilot to /dev/ttys0.
No dice.
Any suggestions?

alias char-major-27 zftape
options ftape ft_fdc_driver=bpck-fdc,none,none,none

This configuration works fine with SuSE Linux 6.2.

I have found this problem in some newsgroups. But unfortunately I

Subject: Moving between virtual screens: Keyboard commands

Can anyone tell me if there are keyboard that let me pop in between
virtual screens in KDE and Gnome (like in NT there are virtual
 windows
programs like powerbar and x-desk which have keyboard commands for
this, respectively CNTL-SHIFT-n where n is the n-th screen, and
CNTL-ESC-n ( or WINDOWS-n on newer keyboards)?
Also keyboard commands to make the bottom menu collapse left or
 right,
and in the case Gnome to make the menu collapse.

If there are no such commands, is there a way of defining them?

What's wrong with SunOS 4.1.1? It is still better and more mature
than most other Unices, Unix-like and non-Unix OSes.

I administer Linux and UNIX for a living, and it's by no means
 uncommon
for me to attempt a login with the wrong password ...

Agreed; root logins should be disallowed from the word 'go!'. Here
 at
the FDI, there are two other people who have access to the root
 passwords,
in case something should happen when I'm not here. Neither of them
 can
telnet into the machines from their workstations, other than into
 their
user shells, and are thus forced to run su. That way, I can keep an
 eye
on what they're doing ... :-)

Subject: Simple questions: Pronounce, FreeBSD, pico etc....*s*
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:46:22 GMT

From: Hendrix <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi guys,

As a newbie, I would like to take this time and ask a few questions
regarding the pronounciation of various GNU/Linux utilities,
 commands,
licences, concepts etc...<grin> I've heard that different people
pronounce these things differently anyhow, but just the same, I'm
interested in knowing how you guys repeat these words... Should be
 fun,
here goes nothing...*s*

1. vi --- Is it spelled out or spoken "Veye"...
2. GNU --- Is it spelled out, or pronounced "New"...
3. Linux --- Leee-nucks, Len-nucks, or Lie-nucks(How does Linus
 say
it?)..
4. SQL --- Is it spelled out, or pronounced "Sequel".. I've
 heard
both..
5. Daemon --- Is it demon, or daymon...
6. TCL --- I've heard it called Tickle...???*s*
7. pico --- Is it pee-co or pie-co...??? (Hey, I've used it
too)...*s*

In addition, could someone please enlighten me on the following
"simple-natured" questions...???

1. Why is Unix-based systems referred to as *nix based systems when
linux and various other versions end in "ux"...???

2. Is FreeBSD linux or not...??? When I ordered all the
 distributions
from <www.linuxmall.com> I was sent FreeBSD with all the other
distros...

3. Does the POSIX standard dictate the directory structure of *nix
 based
systems (usr, home, bin, etc, var et cetera...)...??? If so, where
 can
I get a copy of this POSIX standard...??? What else does the
 standard
dictate...???

4. Does the sysvinit program install the 'login' and 'sulogin'
 programs
when it is installed itself...??? I know the 'init' process
 activates
and respawns these programs, but is the 'login' and 'sulogin'
 programs
part of the sysvinit distribution...???

5. Does anyone but me use 'pico'...???*smile* Getting used to 'vi'
 is
just killing me...!!!*s*

Sorry for bombarding you guys with all these questions, but I figure
this is the best place to inquire...*smile* Thanks to all you took
 the
time to read and/or respond to this email... Take care...

Sincerely,
