One of the most important files for catching problems is /var/log/messages,
e.g.:

tail -f /var/log/messages > messages &
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart # or some other command
kill %1
less messages

Other useful logs are /var/log/secure and /var/log/maillog.

Important commands:

ps ax, ps aux # to check running processes
top # to check cpu and memory usage
ifconfig # to check network interfaces; bring up interface "by hand"
route -n; route #check routing table; bring up a route by hand
ping -n # ping without reverse lookup
modprobe; modprobe -r; modprobe -c # load/unload modules; list modules (also
parses the conf.modules file.)

Red Hat specific:

chkconfig; ntsysv # check/control starting of boot up processes
sysreport # generate a report on the system

A couple things I don't know how to use very well:

vmstat
netstat

On Red Hat systems, rpm is very useful for finding problems:

rpm -V util-linux # Verify the files in the util-linux package against the
                    rpm database.

The codes it prints out are listed in the rpm manpage.

rpm -Va > verify # Verify all files on the system and redirect to the file
                    "verify".

rpm -qf /bin/login # show package file /bin/login belongs to.

grep bin/ verify # list modified binaries

grep ' c ' verify # list modified config files

grep -v ' c ' verify | cut -c12- | xargs rpm -qf | sort -u

The former lists all packages that have at least one affected file that is
not a config file.

Note that this only works for things that are in the rpm database. It's not
a substite for tripwire.

To install update packages:

rpm -Uhv foo.rpm #update or install
rpm -Uhv --force foo.rpm #force re-install if already installed
rpm -ihv foo.rpm #install, specifically install along side an older version
if present (-i should always be used when installing kernel rpms).
rpm -Fhv *.rpm # update only those rpms for which a previous version is
                 installed.

Common problems I've seen:

* /etc/hosts is not correct (missing or modified localhost entry for instance)
  (An amazing number of problems turn out to be a wrong localhost entry.)
* /etc/conf.modules syntax errors keep modules from loading
* /bin/login, /bin/ps, /bin/top modified.  lsattr shows i or a attributes on
  binaries (You've been rooted.)
* Incorrect PATH

>I would like some tips on how to simulate errors in RH,

This is pretty easy to do:

* Remove or munge localhost line in /etc/hosts.
* Add a syntax error to /etc/conf.modules. I've seen linuxconf leave
  something like

  options tulip irq=

  which will break loading of PCI NIC modules.
* Modify permissions on /tmp or /var/lock. If you want to be really tricky,
  change the attributes (chattr).
* Add or remove things in /etc/hosts.allow, /etc/hosts.deny, or
  /etc/inetd.conf.
* If you have a PnP NIC, turn on "PnP OS" in the BIOS.
* Add an invalid entry to /etc/fstab (or have it try to fsck or auto mount
  the cdrom drive with nothing in the drive.)

For the last one, students need to know how to remount a partition rw, e.g.:

mount -o remount,rw /

There are dozens of config files to which small errors can be added. Various
config files, device files, and directories must have specific permissions.

You might want to try a few fatal errors and have the students use a rescue
disk (like tomsrtbt from www.toms.net) to fix them. One very simple
showstopper is an incorrect /etc/ld.so.conf.

I *think* this should work:

reference somewhere in /etc/rc.local:

(assumes a line in /etc/passwd like this (adjust the UID/GID and home
dir as needed):

pinballuser:!!:500:500:Pinball User:/home/pinball:/bin/bash

#!/bin/sh

su pinballuser -c '~pinballuser/startx' &

==========

~pinballuser/startx contains:

#!/bin/sh
cd ~pinballuser
startx

~pinballuser/.xinitrc contains:
exec pd

=================

Actually, if the box is headless, why do you need a *graphical* sound
system? Wouldn't it make more sense to use a non-graphical sound
system. Then all you would need would be the line:

su pinballuser -c 'noguipd args...' &

in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Then you can dispense with even installing an X server and running it.
X11 uses a lot of resources... You can then live with a random 'junk'
video card (no need to get just the right X server, etc.).

Both XFree86 4.0, and 3.3.6 are in M 7.1. I believe to use 4.0 you have to do
an expert install.

  You make some good points, however go to http://www.google.com,
and search on 'comparison of linux distributions'. There is a
plethora of information out there on the net. I snipped your point
about not engaging in flame wars. It is a good point however it
is somewhat idealogical, history has shown a willingness to flame
over:

1. editors (vi vs. emacs, etc.)
2. shells (tcsh vs. bash, etc.)
3. window managers (window maker vs. afterstep, etc)
4. desktop environments (kde vs. gnome, etc)
5. OS'es ( Linux vs. FreeBSD, etc)
6. Lastly, Linux distributions.

  To me, with any of these topics asking "which is best" is
inflamatory. To use the classic car analogy, which is better
(Ford vs. GM, etc) will start a holy war among car fans. The
problem is that it is a matter of personal preference, and
if people can possibly disagree, they will. Perhaps I should
take a more newbified approach. :-)
