I thought that the -r was for reboot

shutdown -h now will shutdown and halt the computer now ie 0 seconds
shutdown -r now will shutdown and restart the computer now
reboot is an alias for it on my Mandrake 7.2

Hi,

I have a Pentium 166 with 64 meg of RAM and a separate 6 gig harddisk
for linux. I used to run Red Hat 6.0; the performance was good, although
it pages quite a bit when GIMP and Netscape are used (especially at the
same time). Recently I upgraded to Linux-Mandrake 7.2 and I noticed a
performance hit, to the point of being annoying. (I also have a problem
with no sound, but that's another issue).

I'm thinking of switching to some (possibly older) distribution. I have
couple choices: RedHat 6.1, 6.2, 7.0, or Corel Linux 2nd ed. (I don't
have the RH6.0 disks anymore).

What would you recommend? My priorities are: stability, performance
(with stability being slightly more important).

Hello,

I have been trying to install MATLAB 5.3 on Red Hat Linux
6.2. Unfortunately MATLAB prompts me with a message that
I need an ld.so at least as recent as 1.9.7. The ld.so
package that ships with Red Hat 6.2 is ld.so 1.9.5. I
went and looked at the RPMS for Red Hat Linux 7.0 and
was surprised to find that the ld.so RPM has been taken
out of the distribution. Why did they take it out?
Also, where can I get an updated ld.so and should I go
ahead and do the upgrade myself?

Thanks,

Does Linux have an equivalent to MS Windows '98 command Ctrl-Alt-Delete and
then End Task so that you can reset the computer if it is stalled or
"frozen" without completely rebooting the computer?

With the current ssh-agent you only need to run it as a sister of the
session. (and get the envirenment variables set).

> $ ssh-agent startx

You should better set the exec ssh-agent <your window manager> in .xsession
since the ssh agent needs to be directly connected by sockets and
environment, both wont work with x servers in between.

Had similar experience. Kernal needs to be booted to disable the serial
number check (or was this serial id?).

>From lilo add parameter "x86_serial_nr=1"

  example:

    LILO: linux x86_serial_nr=1

I had been told to rebuild the kernal disabling the check, but instead I
have LILO supply the parameter each time.
Did this by editing the lilo configuration file.

Don't know much more than this, but it worked for me!

Good Luck,

Install RH 6.2.

What are you using for a 'desktop'? Gnome? Gnome is a resource hog.
With a P166 w/ 64meg, you would be better off with a *simple* fvwm2
based desktop. Yes, you lose all of the eye-candy and whatnot, but your
machine will thank you. I run RH 5.2 on a Cyrix P166+ w/64Meg. No
problems running GIMP & Netscape *at the same time*. GIMP grinds when I
haul in a *big* image, but is otherwise quite usable. I often have
*several* Netscape windows open at the same time. Yes, it will page if
I get lots of stuff all at once.

Hi, Matt:

I've a partition problem too, but I tried reading the How-To, but still
can't find the answer.

Anyway, I've a 30G hard drive, and 6G hard drive. The 30G is currently
partitioned into 10G, 9G, ~4.5G, ~4.5G. The 6G hd is partitioned into 3 x
2G.

I've Windows2000 installed in the 10G partition of the 30G hd.

You mentioned that one should make a small partition (<8G). I would assume
the partition should be in my 30G hd. My problem is that I already have
Win2000 install in the 10G partition, and how would I be able to partition
that partition and not trashing Win2000?

TIA

if you go to a terminal (xterm, say) and enter the command

killall program-that-is-stuck

it'll usually kill that program and not touch anything else.
Sometimes you have to go kill -9 program-that-is-stuck
if killall doesn't work, but that's fairly rare and may cause
you to lose some data.

For instance, I am reading my news on knode right now,
and it did just what you described -froze up. I changed to
a different window and in an xterm issued killall knode. It
shut knode right down; I then restarted it and here I am again
reading my news without having lost anything.

the one little problem with this is when you don't know what
Linux calls the program you want to kill. I just tried killall
knode as a guess; fortunately it worked. I would have tried
KNode next, if the first guess failed. Sometimes it isn't so
obvious.

Linux is superior to Windows 98 in that you can kill and
restart errant programs one by one and it won't crash the
rest of your system or force you to restart the whole thing.

Ok guys, I'm trying to come up with a non-goofy pinguino (readers of my "Is
design really that overrated?" article will know what this means), I know
it's possible, because they are graceful and pretty when they swim.

Anyway (as a pet project), I'm coming up with an umbrella pinguino logo
(maybe to stamp on boxes of approved / compliant hardware)

After I finish this, I'm tackling that water buffalo-looking thing the free
software foundation uses.

Here is the early "alpha source" =)

http://pages.infinit.net/outcasts/pinguinos.html

If anyone wants to lend me a hand, drop me a line.

NOTE: The usage of the spanish word pinguino is deliberate, to give that
latin charm to what otherwise would be a little, fat, clumsy, shuffling
creature of the antarctic climates. And don't try to tell me there are
pinguinos in the Galapagos! The prettiest are Rockhoppers and Emperors!
which sort attacked Linus BTW? Anyone know?=)

On the Linux machine, install...

1) pop3d, imapd, sendmail, and procmail for email support
2) Samba and/or Mars-NWE and/or nfsd for file server support, and

in this case all you have to do is
ps auwx
find the name of the process and then you can use the name or the pid (which killall
also accepts).

Yup. There are many ways to do that. My preferred Version of dumping
whole Partitions is described in the following:

1. Configure a box as nfs Server
2. Boot the box you want to backup with tomsrtbt (get it at
www.toms.net). You have to make sure that your NIC is supported by
the kernel.
3. nfs-mount a directory on your nfs Server (has to have room for the
whole Image of your Partition).
4. dump the partition with (for Example)
   dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/imagedir/image bs=1024
5. After a while (approx. 2 hours for 400 MB Partition) your image
will be built. Restore is much faster ! (approx. 20 min. for 400 MB)
6. Done.

Hi, I got a new computer with a bigger harddisk. For some reason I need my old
Linux System (modified RedHat5.2) with kernel 2.0.36. Now for an other reason
I need Windows or one big program for Windows respectively.
I configured my harddisk in normal. i.e. CHS, mode and copied my Linux to the
harddisk. Because of very small h-value my bootable section (1024 cylinders)
is to small to fit all the Win98 stuff at it. So I need a logical partition to
install the Win98 program. The system fits into the boot partition. I screwed
up. Win98 tells me for some reason it wants to have LBA accessing. I managed
to configure the Win98 partitions in Linux (I shouldn't do). I fooled windows
a bit and installed the logical device as Win95 >32 (LBA). If I use any other
mode windows tells me something gone wrong at boot and tries scandisk with
smashing the hole disk. With LBA mode partitions I need to reformat the
partition after each reboot of Win98, quiet a big problem since my program or
windows respectively needs to reboot after installing.

Has somebody any suggestions to me?

Tanks in advance
Tilo

win95 won't boot even after runing fdisk /mbr
well two possibilities exist

    1. the partition table has been damaged
yes it can be manually repaired but requires considerable effort and
skill. The information needed to manually repair the partition table is in
the lilo source file read me. The skill is not in the readme. Good luck

    2. the boot sector of windows9x is damaged
I don't know how to fix this short of a full reinstall.

They appearently beleive that nobody is still using programs
compiled for libc5. They are wrong, so for that reason I
think the 6.2 version is the final release. We also depend
on iBCS for some old package compiled for SCO unix.

The logrotate is sending SIGHUP to the syslogd process, but it appears
if there are too many files to be rotated and logrotate sends too many
SUGHUP signals in a very short time, then syslogd occasionaly misses
the last one.

Doing killall -HUP syslogd, will fix this for now, until next time.
