=================================================================
This is the Linux Counter summary as of Fri Dec 1 00:42:00 2000
There are 162136 persons registerd.
3023 users have been registered by friends.
There are 84804 machines registered.
I guesstimate that between 0.2% and 5% of all Linux users have
registered with the Linux Counter.
So the total number of Linux users is probably between
3,242,720 and 81,068,000 people.

Does the directory /usr/share/vim/vim56/syntax exist, and is it full of
.vim files? And, oddly enough, my .vimrc contains the line
so ${VIMRUNTIME}/syntax/syntax.vim
so try that? I should know more about this, but syntax highlighting
has Just Worked for me wherever I've used vim.

The existence of these files with extremely funky permission bits and
nonexistent UIDs implies that there's something drastically wrong with
your filesystem. If the chattr -i thing mentioned by other posters
fails to get rid of these things, umount the partition and e2fsck -f it.
If that doesn't turn up a bunch of errors, read the man page for debugfs
about 3 times, then run debugfs on the partition, then e2fsck it again.

I think the accuracy is justified, especially because X seemingly
labels things backward from other systems. I didn't quite infer that
point the previous messages.... If I draw inferences, I like to
have more background than the information that was there.

Don't worry yourself about anything Kulkis says. He's a well-known
Usenet liar and hatemonger who doesn't really know anything about
Linux or Unix despite his claims to be a "Systems Engineer".
If you doubt me, read his sig and work out what it tells you about
him. He's best killfiled.

You choose the UNIX version and you find out that there is no version 8 but only 7.
You pick the linux version that you want and install it.

I used to see this with RH 6.2 and ptys. I would try to run
xxgdb and be told that I didn't have permission for ptyXY. I did
a Yahoo search and saw some others complaining but no
explanation.
I've upgraded to RH 7.0 and it seems to have gone away (knock

It is possible that KDE or gnome is hogging the sound card and keep you from using it.
Try disabling the noise support and reload the GUI to see if you can access it.
There are some system that supports sharing the sound card but from what I've seen
gnome or kde will prevent a foreign app from accessing the sound card.
Before I disabled sound support in gnome I would be unable to run any sound program on
the console with gnome in the background.
Basically it tells me that because of the moronic way the GUI is handling the sound, we
have no choice but to disable the use of the sound card by the GUI.

Subject: Help config standalone INN
Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 19:43:35 -0600
After installing Inn-2.2.2 on Redhat 6.2 , trying to configure it for a
simple standalone isolated newsgroup server is another matter. I can
start it, and create groups, and post messages, but they expire after
about 7 days. I'm reading the expire man pages to try to figure that
out. Does anyone have some general tips for this "simple" type of
configuration. Do I have to worry about the "database" or other overhead
stuff. All I want is to be able to post messages and they should never
expire.

No, I don't think you quite get it yet.
X is a client/server graphical system to which applications attach,
perhaps remotely across a network. GNOME and KDE represent widget and
utility libraries used to implement applications that request
graphical services from X.
The natural result of thisis that there's no reason why you
_can't_ run GNOME and KDE applications simultaneously.
The _only_ sort of application that _can't_ coexist with another is a
window manager. You can only run one window manager at a time. The
only reason that you might need to restart X is if the last thing
startx does is to spawn a _window manager_, and you want to change
_window managers_. <http://www.PLiG.org/xwinman/> GNOME and KDE are
_not window managers_, despite all too common ignorant claims to the
contrary.
