Hi Tom: at the beginning it's probably a good idea to stick with
rpms. Take a look at http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ to see what's
available for your distro. Often even proprietary stuff is offered
as rpm packages, eg applixware, realplayer, ... On that website you
can also easily check dependencies.
When you try compiling something it will usually complain about some
library missing which you can then easily install using rpm - don't
forget to install the respective development library, too.

hope this helps, Gerald

PS: personally, I started with RH4.0 more then three years back and there
were some ups and downs - especially when rpms were no longer offered
en masse for libc5 systems. This summer I replaced my upgraded RH4.0
with Suse 6.4 on my home machine (mainly b/c it supports German dsl)
and on my machine at work I run Debian 2.2 which I like more and
      more.

I didn't see anything that indicated they were dropping FrameMaker
for Linux as a product.

All the announcement said was that the beta program was over.
You shouldn't expect beta code to be supported forever.

I wouldn't be supprised if we see a commercial version (you have to
pay for it) of FrameMaker for Linux sometime in the near future.

When I have setup remote smb and remote novell printers using printtool I
also have had problems printing after doing a test page from printtool.
What I have had to use lpc to restart printing and queing.
Read the man page for lpc to do this.

Subject: Anyone know an app that's capable of doing this?
Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2000 16:19:28 GMT

Greetings!

I'm looking for an app that will recursively download all the
subsequent links and their contents and files for a given link.
I understand WGET might be able to do this, but from what I've
read on freshmeat, I'm not so sure.

What I need the program to be able to do ultimately, is for eg.,
let's say I specify a link such as this:
http://some.edu/c201/lectures.html
and in this link, there are
several other links one of which is a link to an actual directory
and not another URL or an webpage, such as:
http://some.edu/c201/ass2/
which contains various textfiles, ps files, source files and etc.

So, along with other links, I need an app which can recognize
contents of an actual directory and not a webpage and download and
save all the contents of it.

Can someone please recommend an app which will do this for
me? TIA.

Best,
BR

Well, it generates parsers!
What are parsers good for? Compiler front-ends, data mining,
simple embedded languages, all kinds of stuff. Get a good
compiler book and READ it.

Subject: 2 way serial connection between 2 pcs
Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 17:06:52 -0000

hello all,

I am trying to connect two pcs via their serial ports. I have made a
null-modem cable and have physically connected both machines. I have also
read the Serial-HOWTO and the Serial-ProgrammingHOWTO.

The examples in the serial-rogramming HOWTO only process input - i.e. it
receives but doesn't write. I have another program that writes to the serial
port. It seems there is something happening between the two serial ports,
but its fairly lame (the recieving pc prints to screen "received SIGIO
signal".

What i really need is some code that looks for input from the keyboard and
sends it straight to serial, but also listens for input on the serial port
and sends this to screen

Running this program on both computers should then route the keyboard input
from one machine to the screen of the other pc. (I think miniterm does
something like this - i'm not sure, it won't work for me).

any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks,
ruadhan

** 2>/dev/null

This sends the standard-error stream (whose file descriptor is "2"), which
is supposed to contain error messages, to /dev/null instead of the screen.
Things written to /dev/null are just thrown away.

** ||

This is the "or" operator, used in the form
command1 and its arguments || command2 and its arguments
If command1 returns "true", then command2 is skipped.

** :

This is a shell command, documented in the bash(1) man page as follows:

       : [arguments]
No effect; the command does nothing beyond expand
ing arguments and performing any specified redirec
tions. A zero exit code is returned.

("0" is "true" in shell.)

So
  some_command || :
is a fancy way of running some_command but returning "true" (even if
some_command returns non-zero, i.e., false).

By tradition /usr/local is the place to put things which you compile and
place on your system, while /usr is the place for things which come with the
operating system. If /usr/local is placed on a different partition, then
when you reinstall the OS all of your special programs are left unaffected
and do not need to be reinstalled.

Youre right - old discs dont work with tag queue nor fast - set it to 1 and
not more than 5M/sec, although controller is still great and usable with
newer

wget is your tool. It has lots of flags to specify, for example,
pattern matching on links, restrictions on which links to follow,
maximum recursion depth and the like. If you examine the names of the
kinds of links you want to follow, you can probably set up the pattern
matching to get what you want.

If you need finer control, you might use the perl LWP modules but this
will require some programming. There is a chapter in the perl
cookbook which details how to do the basic things and the code is
available online.

I think you have two problems. You probably are having a problem
with the dual processors. You need to be using the right kernel
and have everything set up properly for booting it. I'm not
sure exactly what to tell you about that, but perhaps someone else
will.

Secondly, it is not unusual for configuration of X to fail during
installation. Try running Xconfigurator and experiment some with
the choice of monitor. Also, try custom for moniitor and pick
one of the generic choices that comes up if no monitor choice works.
In addition, someone with a similar graphics and monitor configuration
may be able to give you more information. In extreme cases it may
be necessary to edit the file XF86Config in /etc/X11.

This redirects the standard error in bash to the 'file' /dev/null,
which basically means to ignore the error output of the command. See
the bash manpage for more info on redirection.

Subject: Problems running ./configure
Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 17:40:04 -0000

Hi,
I'm bored with trying things now...

I am trying to compile some software which needed the libpcap package. I
installed libpcap-0.4-29.i386.rpm and tried again.
The configure script nearly ran all the way through until:

checking for pcap_dump in -lpcap... yes
checking for pthread_create in -lpthread... yes
checking for pcap.h... no
configure: error: Test for pcap.h failed.

Oh!
but I've just installed the libpcap package which provides pcap.h and even
run ldconfig to make sure.
Ok so I'll try:

locate pcap.h
/usr/include/pcap/pcap.h

I'ts there!
what's going on?

Can anybody help me please...

Thanks in advance...

Andy.

Read the last 4 lines of this post.

Did you look inside the directory? ls -ab ~*

To delete directory
rmdir ~

If the rmdir fails you could use
          rm -ir *~*
carefull with the typing, if you do rm -ir * ~* or *~ *
you lose everything.

HI,

Thanks for responding.

The mouse is exactly what is causing the problems.

As soon as I click in the other window, I now have selected
something else. I have to go back and reselect.
So, I end up concentrating on hand eye
coordination, instead of what I am working on.
I could never have done this when I injured my hand.

Are there any telnet windows with the Edit menu, and the
Cut and Paste commands?

Thanks

Subject: Disaster recovery info
Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 16:29:58 GMT

My computer at home dual boots Windows95 (family members think they
need MSOffice) and GNU/Linux. Windows95 has been behaving very badly
of late, so I decided to reinstall it. I was somewhat aware that doing
so would probably affect the ability for the two operating systems to
cooperate, so I made what I believed were the necessary preparations
to do the reinstall.

What I did not do is record the details of the partition table, which
is unfortunate, since the Windows95 reinstallation helpfully removed
it for me.

I am somewhat resigned to the fact that I may have to start the Linux
side over again from scratch, unless there is anyone who can point me
to resources that might help me recover from this problem.

All I can do at the moment is, using a floppy and CD provided with my
SuSE 6.1 distribution, run Linux in a "rescue mode".

What I can't do, of course, is mount any of the old filesystems, since
they no longer exist.

I would imagine that the data on the hard drive is still there. I
would like to see if there is any damage recovery I can undertake,
just as much to learn how as anything else.

\begin{humility} Although I realize my preparations for any kind of
disaster were woefully inadequate \end{humility}, \begin{rant} my
utter disdain for that oozing, smelly, pus-like growth masquerading as
an operating system cannot be expressed strongly enough! \end{rant}

Regards,
Neil Montgomery
