Oddly enough, if I point the localhost broswer to

  http://localhost:8080

the apache default page pops up, but

  http://localhost

says page not found.. I doublechecked- httpd.conf is listening on port
8080.

Is there something else that could cause httpd to listen on a different
port?

the sony vaios, at least the one i have the Z505HS, has some proprietary
stuff on it like the memory stick and the firewire port. The modem is a
winmodem so forget about it working in Linux. The ethernet however works
like a charm with the eepro100.o module. I use the SVGA X server and i
think my res. is 1024x768 with 16bit color if i remember correctly.
Cant use the floppy yet b/c dont' have usb support for floppy drives (i
doubt any normal desktop would have this type of floppy so this support
will either never come or it will be a WHILE).

NS has a memory leak, 4.7 i believe is the one i have in suse 6.3
After it takes up RAM and swap it will cause the system to freeze as
there is no more memory to use. Once I see NS's memory usage go up i
watch it very very carefully and if i'm not doing anthing i'll just kill
it right there and restart it however if i'm busy using it i'll watch
the memory usage and kill it as soon as posible so the system doesnt
freeze

Is there a program to run in the shell that restores (or re-creates)
the necessary config files/directorys etc when there is a problem with
your window session?

I ask for a couple reasons:

1. After changing my NIS user ID and rebooting, then doing 'startx'
I no longer get the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. YES, all
of my files are now owned by me and my new user ID etc

2. After the same NIS change, my co-worker cant even get the multiple
windows to come up, she has to manually select an Xterm to get anything
        at all.

Ive seen these things in the past and the only way Ive ever been able to
fix it is to re-install RH 6.2, obviously NOT a good choice.

Any tips/ideas help is appreciated

TIA
Jeff

Linux 2.2.18 is around 2.5 megs. What's up with
that? Every other kernel patch has fit on a floppy.

I just installed a new distro and I want to bring
the kernel current but I have no net connection for this
box.

What is a person to do without being able to patch the
kernel with floppies? Don't patches typically try to stay
under 1.4megs?

You have to have a program that understands hidden partitions, such PQ
Magic.

Yes, that would be the problem. With the partition hidden, nothing can see
it but the partitioning program.

i guess its a few entries from even longer ago, right?

if i want to make that extended partition work again, i guess
i have to find the precise entries in the output it corresponds

any tips?

I didn't try either of those. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know that
there are such hot-keys. (I'm a 3-day old Linux user.) But everything on the
screen was greyed out. It didn't seem to respond to keyboard at all.

No, I didn't. I installed original Redhat 7 I downloaded from their site.
Are those updates necessary for the stability? Thanks.

How do you monitor Netscape memory usage? Is there any utility program for
that? And is it possible to allocate limited memory to Nescape so that it
cannot disturb the entire system? Thanks.

Kmuser allows me to add users using 5 digit numbers.
When I write a bash script to do the same thing, useradd won't allow it.

The tip given in the other reply (the mem=amount kernel argument) will
work fine. However, you might also look to see if the problem is fixed
in the latest BIOS for your machine. This is a BIOS-related problem and
it was fixed in the BIOS for my motherboard (Abit BX6-2.0). I wouldn't
be surprised if HP has also fixed this problem.

Yes. You'll need two config files, minirc.ttyS0 and minirc.ttyS1. Each

Use the command line to specify a config file:

mincom ttyS0

Choose "development install" for your needs.

Both have Apache. If the default "development" install doesn't provide
you with a working apache, then, install it and configure it graphicaly.
