My ASUS board came with this cool program which tells me the cpu
temp, mb temp, and a bunch of other crap. Gives me an interface
to work with the Software CPU cooling (whatever that is) and
lets me view and set alarms for various temperatures and fan
RPMs.....

Does such a thing exist for linux? I think this is just an
interface to the BIOS, if so how would one go about working with
that? Some sort of ioctls?

Choose an ascii font instead of an iso-8859? I don't have

The VCD format is simply an extension of iso9660 afaik....there
are additions which make the vcd player able to play it, but the
iso filesystem lets the computer look at it like a normal CD.

Subject: Advice on Gateway Performance (1000/1400)
Date: 28 Dec 2000 12:48:12 GMT

I am considering purchasing either a Gateway 2000 Performance 1000 (GPS-1000)
or a Performance 1400 (GPS-1400). Their system specifications are roughly
the same, using GeForce2 MX for video, 60 GB EIDE hard drives, 16x DVD
drives, and so forth. I am replacing the modem/ethernet card with the
offered alternative ethernet card from 3Com and purchasing an external
modem. The two models differ in that the GPS-1000 has a PIII 1GHz CPU,
whereas the GPS-1400 uses a P4 1.4GHz. That being said, has anyone had
any experience with installing Linux on these computers, positive OR
negative? I am particularly concerned with the DVD-ROM (especially its
capability to act as a CD-ROM drive), the Ethernet card (the Gateway site
only says that it is an Ethernet card with a few references to
compatibilty with various NetWare versions, Windows and DOS; it does not
mention the chip or model), and the EIDE adapter (I have heard some Gateway
models come with a Promise adapter that causes most Linux kernels to
choke; although the specifications say that the EIDE adapter is on the
motherboard, I am still concerned). Any advice or help you can provide
would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, does anyone know where I can get the Debian testing release
codenamed "Woody" on CD-ROM? I would like to have access to XFree86 4.0.2
without downloading 20+ megs if possible so that I can use the GeForce2's
3D functions.

Thank you very much for your time, and any help you can provide.

Greets,

I recently updated my ELF libraries. Now, on booting, I get:

(and similar for c2, c3, c4)

And this just cycles repetedly.

What did I do? Any help? Running 2.2.10, Slackware.

probably because it uses qt 1.x or kde 1.x ?
try finding an irc client for kde2... (look at www.freshmeat.net , or
apps.kde.org)

it also might be you havent installed some *.devel* packages.

Or it might be the 'broken' compiler in RH7.0, try upgrading it,
there are upgrades to gcc at www.redhat.com

Why should this be a RedHat issue ?
I suppose it's a KDE bug, the kde (1) versions is pretty much the same
in RH 6.2 as in RH 7.
Get KDE2 from www.kde.org , much better than KDE1

That's for sure. My old machine has 64megabytes RAM, but when I rebooted
it from W95 yesterday, it ran lousy and the disk IO lite was lit solid.
I noticed (top) that it thought I had only 32 megabytes memory, but it
really has 64. This happens every few months. I rebooted, the BIOS found
all the memory, and it worked its normal self. With all 64 Megabytes
RAM, it hardly ever swaps.

Still not as fast as this machine with 512 megabytes RAM, of course.

ok, if you do "passwd -S" on your system accounts, most of them would show
the status "password not set". these accts have no password set, so noone is
able to authenticate himself using a password, so they can't log on to those
accounts. what i want to do is unset the passwords for some of the accts on
my machine. i'm not talking about a empty password here.

interestingly the man page say the -d option "disable" the password, i don't

On my RedHat 6.1 box the easiest way to setup this card
was via linuxconf. Goto Config->Networking->Client Tasks->Basic Host
information->Adapter 1. You then fill it out with the important
stuff for the card being

Net Device: eth0
Kernel Module: via-rhine

You may have to do a modprobe && /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
to get it working

Why not run Samba? That is what Samba is designed for, to save you the
trouble of figuring out other ways to do it. Do you really want to
figure out Microsoft Protocol, expose your system to hacking attempts,
and all that? Samba is free, you know.

Agreed. and not trying to provoke flames. But leaving at least one of the
lighter weight window managers out of most distributions (as an option to
hogs like Gnome and KDE) is shortsighted IMO. What does it take to have a
look at available RAM during an install, and provide suggestions should X
be selected (including ForgetAboutIt)? That one piece of timely advice is
probably priceless (for newbies, especially).

I cut my teeth on olwm and Sparcs years ago and guess I never grew out of
that childish phase. It swaps very little on SuSE 6.4 (2.2.16) and 32M or
Turbolinux 6.0 (2.2.16) 32M unless I use hogs like Netscape. Even then it
seems remarkably adept at using cache and bufffers to minimize swap. That
is also what has worked fine at work in more a multiuser mode than home.

In fact, olwm and xrn on 32M at home is what I am using now, dialing into
work on a "mere" 56K modem. Not as snappy as the LAN at work, but not too
shabby, either.

Back to the lean kernel thread: I agree there's much more advantage to be
had in maximizing RAM and minimizing X demands than putting a kernel on a
diet, as in the OP scenario (as I understand it).

I'm not sure of what value this might be, but rather than make it
part of the boot process, why not create a cron job to do:

   badblocks -v /dev/hda5 <blockcount>

(maybe once a year, or every 5 years... remember, badblock checking is
not predictive).

Of course, you could put something in your rc.local startup script that
would ask if you wanted to do a badblock check. Doing an fsck on
a mounted file system is a no-no (unless it's mounted read-only).

Yeah, this is an executable for windows most likely. But if you really
want to run it, and it is a simple application, you can run it using wine:

wine filename.exe

Simple as that. If you have any problems, you may want to get the latest
version of wine. You can get the latest version from http://www.winehq.com

Subject: Re: HELP: Linux instal won't recognize adaptec SCSI card

I finally figured this out. It turns out that the IRQ jumper settings
on the card were mislabeled (i.e. the actual PCB silk screen is
wrong)!!! Apparently Adaptec shipped a bunch before catching the
error. Later boards, I am told, have a sticker with the correct
settings. The correct settings can be seen in the following:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.digisle.net/manuals/installation_guides/ava1505_ig.pdf
http://www.actel.com/apps/guru/sep97/rp243.html

Also, I read that the Windows and DOS drivers don't use the IRQ at all
so although it was always set differently than I thought, it didn't
matter in that environment. This certainly compounded the confusion.

In searching Dejanews, I see that the 152x series is notorious for
problems. I wonder how many are due to this IRQ confusion (which I
didn't find referenced in any Dejanews reply on the topic).

I don't yet have RH7, but I would assume that this is something to do

Check your installed packages (rpm -qa | less) and look for something
with Kerberos or something similar in the name, then query that
package (rpm -qi <rpmname>).
