You can install the python rpm from the RH 6.2 disk. The rpms are located
under the redhat/RPMS directory. Simply find the rpm's you want to install
and then (as root) type rpm -Uvh [rpm name]. I don't have my 6.2 disk
handy, but it should work something like:

mount /dev/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/redhat/RPMS <- probably wrong!
dir python*
......
su -c "rpm -Uvh python......"
su -c "rpm -Uvh Kt....."

I'm hoping that the Kt library is named something like that, or it may be
inside another package. It's harder to locate if it's inside another
package - the best way is to look at the 6.2 manual in the section that
describes all the packages. You could also try grep'ing the RPMS directory
for Kt, but you could get a lot of hits.

I had a similar problem on RedHat 6.2.

I fixed it by putting the following line in .bashrc:

REALPLAYER_HOME=/usr/lib/RealPlayer8

OK... I realized my mistake... I have event sounds now. BUT, I would
like to play a sound when I receive a PING. Shouldnt it be possible to
add ;/PLAY soundfile to the ctcp ping reply ?

Any and all help appreciated.

A free solution is to use amanda.
I used amanda which is a good program for SAN and tried to use a robotic
tape drive to do the storage onto DLT.
The problem was the open source driver was in the alpha stage. If the
driver was more mature and worked
properly, it would have been good.

There are very little commercial SAN for linux yet. Vertias Netbackup is
only avaiable for Linux as client only.
My favorite commerical net backup for Solaris server for heavy duty backup
and Oracle backup. It is pretty pricey.

A slightly cheaper solution is to use Legato backup on Solaris.

Define "best" first. Do you want something cheap that performs OK,
something that provides really good image quality, or something that
provides the best possible 3D performance for Quake3? There are several
different answers, so I'll throw out a few of them:

Cheap and OK: ATi Xpert 9x
Good 2d quality: Matrox G200, G400
3D Performance: nVidia TNT2 / nVidia GeForce / 3dfx Voodoo3

All of these cards have a reasonable degree of acceleration with recent
X-servers; much better than that SiS card you mentioned.

It's not practical, sorry. Not that it's infeasible to *do* it (though
it'd take some serious packet-sniffing and whatnot), but the tools that
claim to _do_ it generally either don't catch everything, or catch stuff
they really shouldn't.

It's probably easiest to just turn on some sort of accounting/logging of
what sites are being accessed. You won't stop anyone, or catch them
red-handed, but you can sit down and have a talk after-the-fact.

Alternately you could "fix" things so that those sites started resolving
to a different IP address, say, for www.disney.com (if you believe Disney
to be any less perverse and character-destroying than porn, that is).

At the end of 'chat-script' I use 'W2':

ATM0W2DT<number>
REPORT CONNECT CONNECT ''

and '-r' in 'options' to direct it to a file:

Opening "/etc/ppp/chat.log.earthlink"...
chat: Dec 30 00:55:49 CONNECT 46000
Closing "/etc/ppp/chat.log.earthlink".

This could probably be improved. man 'chat' for details.

Well it does not work on Redhat 7.0 either. I downloaded it from
www.real.com
I tried kpackage to extract rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs1_rpm and I get the
message "package RealPlayer-8.0-1
is for a different architecture"

I want to be able to run a program which takes stdin, and write data
to it whenever I feel like it. I can do this with fifo named pipes. e.g.:

txtplay < named_pipe.fifo
echo "Hello World" > named_pipe.fifo

However, this has the disadvantage of the first command exiting
after the second has finished. What I want is the same as:

txtplay

in effect, so I can just stick in my data whenever I like, and not worry
about it seeing end-of-file. Unfortunately, I cannot simply do this, as I
want the data to be sent to it to be processed through a filter before the
program sees it.

Why don't I just load the program each time I want to send data to
it? Too slow.
What I want, basically, is a way of redirecting the output of a
given command to a fifo named pipe, without the end-of-file. While I'm at
it, how does this EOF business work? Is there a special "EOF" command, or is
it when no more data is received, or when the original program outputting
the data exits?

Thanks for any Enlightenment on the subject -- although I do prefer SawFish.
Ignore that last one.

Trying to change the PATH in the file /etc/profile doesn't work.

But I can change the PATH if I add the line:
PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin; export PATH
to the .bashrc file.

One of the _best_ features of Unix (and it's workalikes, like Linux) is
that utility programs do not _have_ to be self-contained (and are
encouraged _not_ to be self-contained). The pipeline is a perfectly
reasonable way to connect a number of small utilities together into one
big utility, without requiring the monolithic implementation of 'one big
utility' ;-)

Very good advice.
Add to that:
- Check out the Unix Guru Universe for general Unix advice. If you're
asking it, it's probably already been asked and answered before, and UGU
will likely have the answer,
- Check out Ibiblio (used to be metalab) for other Open Source software.

The server you try to access might be using PAP (Password Authentication

Looks like a typo in your /etc/passwd entry. /home/ftp/./username should
be either /home/ftp/username or /home/username (or /home/ftp). However,
if you use something other than /home/ftp, and since it is running in a
chrooted environment, you should copy the contents of /home/ftp into the
user's home directory.

wouldn't matter, if you overwrite the MBR again, the partitiontable will be
overwritten too. It's a part of the MBR

No problem I'd say
It will solve no problems you may have with win2K though. You will restore
it exactly as it is now. (I don't know why you want to do this, unless you
want to copy the NT install to multiple machines, which must then be
physically identical!)
