Hello,

We are using VAlinux 6.2.1 and I have noticed that for some strange
reason, we cannot create files larger than 2gig (Several of our website
logs exceeds 2gig per month) and I was wondering if anyone could shed
any light on what configuration would control the file size limit?

Thanks in advance,

 - Trevor

Hello,

IMHO the 2 GB file size is max in linux 2.2.x. maybe the 2.4 series will
change that?

Anyway, if your logs get big, I would rotate them every day, with some
kind of script or logrotate, just beware
that you copy it and do a >/apache/log/your_log, don't rm it, cause apache
logs to the inode, which will change if you just delete
the logfile and touch a new one. Apache won't be able to log then, until
you restart/reload it!

Small log files out of a daily base are much easier/faster to analize in
most sw.

Good luck

Seems my mistake on the version numbers ...I have done a clean reinstall the
egcs rpm package, and it do come up with 2.91.66. Thus, seems that this is
created by the rpm package. However, I still keep getting the same error as
mensioned before. Any idea what's the cause, and how to get it fixed?

I am using telnet to access my linux box (RedHat 6.2) but found that it had
different color for different directory type, which make me very hard to
read. Wonder if there is anyway to turn off these colors, or set it to use
just green color for all text?

Hello,

setup a user with no special rights at all, no shell access.

Create a path that belongs to this user, that the right that he can
read/write to this path.
Set $HOME of this user to the above metioned path.

Some settings are depend on the ftpd you are using, for more info

apropos ftp

Read the manpages that apropos shows...I know there are very much...

I have just setup samba on my Linux box (RedHat 6.2) on the lan. My Windows
ME can detect it, but when I try to access it, it keep reporting the password
is incorrect? And from the samba log, it seems trying to login using my
Window's Logon username, which I have already defined in /etc/smbusers
(unix_username = win_username). The one problem is that I am using 2 words in
windows seperated by space (bosco tsang), and in /etc/smbusers, I am using
'bosco tsang' ...is this ok? Anything else I am missing?

Btw, one security issue ...since I've setup samba daemon, the log indicated
that a lot of using from outside trying to access it (although all result in
access denied). I am wondering why some many users are doing so ...and is
there anyway to make it undetectable from outside. I am using 2 NICs and only
the internal one is allowed to access samba (setted in /etc/smb.conf).

It works under 3.3.5, but you have to use the
XF86_SVGA under /usr/X11R6/bin/ . It supported
it just fine with mine under RH6.2. I just
recently moved to RH7.0 (uses 3.3.6) and had to
revert the
XFree86 version back to the one that comes w/ RH
6.2 (3.3.5).

I just installed 4.0.2 of XFree86 yesterday. The
card is supported, including using OpenGL, but I
am having problems moving above 8bit color depth.
The previous release went to 32 bit w/o any issues
but didn't have the OpenGL support. I imagine I
will eventually get it figured out.

For information go to the website at
http://www.xfree86.org You won't see it
referenced as Stealth S540. It is more prevalent
by its chipset name... S3 Savage4.

Hope this helps.

I am currently using the S540 with my RH 7.0 box. I was using it w/o
any problems in ver. 6.2 also. Onc exception though: RH v7.0 includes
an upgrade to XFree86 which corrupts when using the S540 card. You can
revert back to the XFree86 3.3.5 (I think, may be 3.3.6, whichever ships
with RH6.2) It works just fine except your /etc/X11/X should be linked
to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA rather than /usr/X11R^/bin/XFree86.

I just installed XFree86 4.0.2 (which includes OpenGL support) and the
card work "okay" I'm still having problems determining how to make it
function above an 8 bit color depth. It was working all the way up to
32 bit with the older XFree86 using the SVGA support. I will probably
get it soon though.

For help on the XFree86 and this card you can look on
http://www.xfree86.org

Keep in mind it won't be called a Diamond Stealth II S540 there. It is
referenced by its "chipset" which is S3 Savage4.

Hope this helps.

I installed 2 Turbolinux at 2 separate machine A and B. I want to make
some users who do not need a password when they are login.

=========================================================================

In Machine A, I tried as following:

>passwd -d user123
>passed -S user123
Changing password for user user123
Empty password.

(and I can login this user without a password.)

=========================================================================

In Machine B, I got something different as following:

>passwd -d user123
>passed -S user123
Changing password for user user123
No Password set.

(and I CAN'T login with this user without a password.)

=========================================================================

Why this happened? The two machines are have same linux version and same
config, and I tried to delete the problem user in machine B, and
recreate again, but problem still exists.
Thanks for any helps!

Hi. I have been down this road and the most cost effective REAL
solution for someone wanting a small business accounting system for
Linux is to get Win4Lin at around $50. This is fantastic, inexpensive
LINUX program which enables yo to run almost all your Windows programs
in a window on your Linux desktop. It is not an emulator. It requires
a legal copy of Windows and does some magic to allow Windows to run
inside Linux.

I use MYOB here and I can honestly say it is my first really pleasant
experience with Windows because Win4Lin has somehow made it stable.

If I sound overly enthusiastic it's not because I own shares in the
company (I wish) but because it works as advertised.

All the native Linux programs that I was able to find are basically on
the level of Quicken and are not suitable for business (no invoicing,
receivables etc.) The best of those is Moneydance.

Some _potential_ alternatives are listed at the URL below. One of the
classes of "classic" failed-free-software-projects is very much what
you're describing; various folks have tried, and failed. There are
several such would-be projects under way, as well as some
actually-available commercial packages that are somewhat more
sophisticated than Peachtree/QuickBooks.

I have W95 on one box talking to Samba on this one. You must have the
same login on both boxen, and the letters must be all lower case for it
to work. I do not know about newer versions of Windows, but W95 seems to
require dumb passwords.

You don't have as86 installed. Install it. It probably comes in a

Whereas many files do not have a flag character added by "ls -F", an
alias found in several distros is 'ls --color'. This adds several
characters to most file names (for terminal color control), thus making
a list of file names 'corrupt'. Incidentally, a "\" in front of the
ls would prevent the alias substition, i.e., "\ls". But Floyd is
correct, and I hate to admit that I've caught myself doing the same
silly thing.

What an idiot!
I supose you know what the word *front* means?
If so, why are you suggesting something that doesn't pull it front but
leaves it in back of everything else?

Hi,

I have a dual boot machine (Win98/Linux), but recently something
is wrong with Win98, so I want to re-install it.
After I re-install it, do I have to use floppy to boot my Linux
and re-run LILO ?

The reason I ask is because my floppy drive is not working properly :(
So, if I need to use my floppy to boot Linux, then I have to buy
another floppy drive first before I do anything stupid :)

Best Regards,
Eric Ho

Shouldn't be a problem. If you haven't made _drastic_ changes to the
Linux installation, then it's just a matter of booting from the CD, and
installing again, using the "upgrade" option (assuming it offers one).
This will detect that there are no upgrades to make anyway, then install
LILO for you again. Should be no problem.

Of course, this is a lot simpler if the OSes are on different
hard-drives and the Linux Hard-Drive is primary, in which case you
should be able to just disconnect the Linux HD, make the Win HD primary,
then install, then make the Win HD secondary, and the Linux HD primary,
and reconnect it.

Of course, remember Murphy, and his law..
