Pun,

Normally you can type away at the keyboard inorder to generate some
noise. Try it again and when you get the message, start typing.

Find out who did.
I cannot help with that, as I have no access to your system

First find where it went.

That's odd. (And an important issue to forget)
Was it a tmp directory that got filled?

I suppose it will be using a USB storage device. The alternative is a
serial USB connection to the camera, and those protocols tend to be
proprietary.

Surely they mean "for some value of X"? I suppose the usb storage
device appears as a fake scsi device. (I'm too lazy to look at the code
to find out, but I seem to recall something of the sort from the last
time I looked at it).

Thanks! But I need a solution for a box without keyboard. So sudo is right
for me.

All the best,

Just because you aren't doing anything doesn't mean that Linux is not doing
anything. There may be cron jobs scheduled to run hourly, daily, weekly or
monthly that don't require you to be doing anything on the keyboard to be
running.

It depends. What booting method do you use now?

Subject: presario stuck in sleep mode?
Date: 17 May 2001 14:59:16 GMT

Hi, i have a compaq presario notebook 12xl300b and tried installing suse 7.1
on it and the instalation seemed to go well enough. after installing i tried
shutting down (i don't quite remember if i did "reboot" "shutdown -h now" or
if it was part of the installation process... it was 2am <sorry>) and i
*know* it started shutting down and such but then i couldn't get it to
restart.

when i press power the hard drive spins up for sec (like it is waking up not
booting up) then sits there. My screen stays blank i can't boot off a CD or
floppy, i have tried taking the battery out but it *seems* to remember it was
in sleep mode and tries to wake up (or it is flat busted though i can't
imagine why).

i tried calling compaq <and argued quite a bit after they almost refused to
help me since i had linux installed> they suggested holding the power button
down for a minute with the AC unplugged and battery out then replug it then
try to turn it on no luck... so they have (begrudgingly) offered to pick it
up and *fix* it for me by reinstalling windows ME (gee thanks) on there.

sooooooo, if anyone out there has had this problem and knows of any good fixes
(other than "ahh don't install that virus on my computer") i would
***reall*** appricate the help!!

thank you!

At the top of the nautilus windows right next to help is a little box.
Cick on that box and select preference. Select the windows and desktop
tab, uncheck the "use nautilus to draw desktop" box...

I'm not too familiar with the building process, but the installation does allow
you to specify the install directory using the --prefix option. However, since
you are doing an 'rm -rf', there may be problems (!) with specifying root as the
install dir.

Subject: What am I doing wrong with iptables?
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 11:13:38 -0400

I'm using a slightly modified version of gShield
(http://muse.linuxmafia.org/gshield.html) to set up a firewall for my RH 7.1
Linux box, which also serves as the internet gateway for a small LAN. The
linux box has 3 network interfaces: eth0, the NIC that connects to the
outside world; eth1, the NIC that connects to the local LAN (192.168.1.*),
and ppp0, a dial-up modem connected to the serial port.

The box has a static IP address of, say, 11.22.33.44 . The DSL router
connected to the computer is 11.22.33.43 . The broadcast address is
11.22.33.45

I've been able to tweak gShield to do a lot of what I need, but I'm still
having several problems, even after trying to comprehend the IPTABLES HOWTO
and NAT HOWTO.

(btw, the output of "iptables -L ..." is at the bottom of this message)

1) Every 30 seconds or so, an entry like this appears in /var/log/messages:

May 17 10:36:38 www kernel: gShield / default drop: IN=eth0 OUT=
MAC=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:c1:7a:93:a1:13:08:00 SRC=11.22.33.43
DST=11.22.33.45 LEN=72 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=22423 PROTO=UDP SPT=520
DPT=520 LEN=52

My guess is that the DSL router is sending out a broadcast packet to see
who'll respond, and my Linux box is seeing the packet, then dropping it.
First of all, does the dropping of this packet mess anything up? (i.e. will
the router eventually decide the Linux computer is not on and stop routing
traffic to it?) More importantly, what changes do I need to make to
iptables to allow the Linux machine to respond to this packet (and get rid
of the errors in /var/log/messages)?

2) When I was setting up my PPP connection using the HOWTO, I put the
following in my /etc/ppp/options.ttyS0 file:
11.22.33.44:192.168.1.254
which (if I understand correctly) assigns the person dialing into the linux
box an IP address of 192.168.1.254 . (the idea was so that person would be
on the same LAN as the rest of the computers in our internal network). When
someone connects, the following appears in /var/log/messages:

May 13 22:30:25 www mgetty[14828]: data dev=ttyS0, pid=14828, caller='none',

PROTO=ICMP TYPE=10 CODE=0

Here it appears that gShield thinks ppp0 shouldn't be using an address of
192.168.1.254 (or else it's not happy about the destination address of
224.0.0.2). The only workaround I could come up for this was to find the
part of gShield that added this rule:
   RESERVED all -- 192.168.0.0/16 0.0.0.0/0
and delete it, then add this iptables rule:
   > iptables -A STATEFUL -m state --state INVALID -j ACCEPT
I'm sure that's not the best way to solve the problem. What else can I do?

Finally, here is a big ol' list of my iptables rules. Thanks very, very
much to anyone who can help!

Hi,
I was wondering if there is something like version
control or maybe even an uninstall programm.
Sure, I know about RPM and I also know about
the 'make uninstall' thing. But I mean something
more general. Is there a deamon available that
checks wether a file is going to be overwritten
by some process, probably makes a backup copy
and logs it into a file? And if I want to unistall
a package that is probably spread all over my
system I just tell the deamon:
"Hey, I wanna unistall the stuff I installed on
Date <whatever> by executing "make install".
Please check if any other program has overwritten
the files and try to find wether they are still
neaded by some other program or not. Thanx in
advance, unistalld!"

Does anyone know about such a program? Or
maybe something in development where I could
do beta testing?

Thanks, Felix

I have found that the problem is caused by Suse 7.1. I tried preparing
the same document on Suse 7.0, and despite one crash (compared to 2-3
that may have happened in the same sequence of events on 7.1), on 7.0
the .ps output was correct!

The .ps was viewable in 7.0 printing to either the generic printer or to
a specific HPLJ 2II or 4 or whatever. I actually have a 2p+, but it
doesn't matter much, because the .ps gets rendered by gs anyway for
non-PS printers.

I am becoming convinced that this is a Suse 7.1 problem.

On Suse 7.1? Would you be willing to take my document and see if you
can print it or view the .ps output on the Suse 7.1 system? It would be
very valuable evidence if your 7.1 fails to print the document, but the
7.0 system succeeds, which is the behavior I observed this morning.

You can email me direct if you like.

I've had some instability problems with SO with the newest distros (Mandrake 8,
RedHat 7.1). It might be problems with the later libraries moreso than SO
itself.

As for the 2.2 kernels, the main issues have been with dealing with imported
documents (i.e., converted from Word). I've also found that using a recent Sun
Java helped with performance issues (weird, I know).

Have you looked at the OpenOffice suite? It's based on SO...

In Unix systems, a file is identified by inode. A filename is a
string in a special file called a directory that points to the
inode. Any number (including 0) of strings can point to the same
inode - these pointers are called links. In order for the OS to
release an inode back to the file pool, it must have zero links AND
be closed. So you can open a file, remove it, and it will still
exist until it is closed. It's a handy-dandy way of using temp
storage without worrying about having to remove the file later.

In shell scripts I've often:

   exec 4>$TMPFILE
   exec 3<$TMPFILE
   rm -f $TMPFILE

   ...

   print -u4 "...."
   ...

read -u3 this that and the other thing

   exec 4>&-
   exec 3<&-

You need to poke around with lsof to try to find the file:

Assuming it's /home that's shrinking:

      $ lsof | awk '("/home" == $9) && ($4 ~ /w$/)'
      ksh 11107 dam 3w VREG 64,0x4 (wrapped)
           48720 18518 /home (/dev/vg00/lvol4)

Use find to check the inum (18518). If not found, that's the
culprit. See what app is causing the problem.

Subject: Problem with Mandrake 8 and disk quotas
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm having trouble with quotas on Mandrake 8. I'm using Webmin version
0.85 to administer the server, and when I set the user and group quotas to
on for the time, it sets quota.user and quota.group in the directory. I
found an article on Deja that said I needed to use convertquota to convert
them to be compatible with kernel 2.4. Before converting, clicking on the
link to enable quotas in the Disk Quota section did nothing. After
converting, it does show the users on the system and how much space they
are using, but I cannot set quota limits. After setting the limit and
clicking apply, it goes back to unlimited.

Anybody else having this problem? I've never had trouble before using
webmin. Thanks in advance for your help.

Michael

The source code to ncftp includes a file name README.

Read it!
