VGA Mode 0x12 over X11

I have a program that uses mode 0x12 and is unreadable over X.  Is there
any way to either force another video mode via dosemu or is there a
setup configuration I'm missing.  I've scoured the web, usenet, and deja
to no avail.  Other than the video problem, the program runs.
