Thanks to all for the helpful responses. I got the problem
dealt with.
The cause of the problem was a hacker who got in thru a bug
in rpc.mountd. For those that don't know about it, check
out this URL for more info:

Once the hacker gained root access (thru the above bug),
they used a root kit to replace login, passwd, ping, httpd,
and several other pieces. In my attempt to secure the
server, I secured myself right out of the box!
