Hello Chris,

this happens because your Linux is not connected to the Internet, and
sendmail sits there waiting to connect or resolve something.  Whats he's
doing I don't know.  This sometimes happens to the "smb" package too.

I don't know how to fix this, but you can easily stop them from starting
each time the system is loaded.
On Red Hat, type "ntsysv" and deselect "sendmail" from that menu.

If you need sendmail later on, you can always start it using
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start".
