I find qmail to be a very excellent MTA. It is fast, secure, and
reliable. It will do pop3, but there are a few things about it.

By default, qmail will store user's incoming mail in mbox format, the
same as sendmail & co. This is fine, but not as fault-tolerant. It can
optionally use a "maildir" format, which will store the users' mail in a
directory rather than a single file. This is much more crash-proof, but
breaks compatibility with sendmail-ish programs (pine, etc.)

If all you are using is pop3, then maildirs are very good. If you
require pine, etc. then you will need to stick with mboxes.

Either way, qmail comes with excellent documentation and I found it easy
to install and configure.
