8K seems to be safest, since it's what stupid windows defaults to.
my handwaving explanation is that tcp tries to ack every other packet,
so for smallish bandwidth*delay links, it's usually within a window of
a little over 3k (1500 MTU). I know my SO is much happier with my
cablemodem/masq configuration since I did the 8K hack...
