Run xdm from your init scripts. There may already be a runlevel to do
this; check in /etc/inittab. If there is, you just need to change the
number in the `initdefault' entry.

See the xdm manpage for full details, but in short, look in the file
/usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xresources. Also, the Xstartup, Xsetup and Xreset
scripts can be used to run other programs at various points in the
process (e.g. running xpmroot to change the background).
