Thank you all for responding! And thank you for thinking I'm more
intelligent than I am.
I found the problem - the phone wire was plugged into the wrong plug on the
internal modem! I had unplugged it after using it for outcalls, and plugged it
in wrong when I re-connected.
Unfortunately, I only have a bachelor's degree in engineering. The undergrad
studies teach you "It works better if you plug it in". I'm guessing the
post-grad studies teach you "It works better if it's plugged in CORRECTLY".
