I was attempting to dabble in Linux a bit at work recently, and ran into
a bit of a problem. Whenever I try to use ifconfig to set up the token
ring card, it locks up and never lets go. It won't even let go when I
try to reboot. I usually end up just hitting reset and the next time
around Linux goes through all the fsck'ing because of it.
I started with a 2.0.36 kernel, and moved up to 2.2.2, and net-tools
1.49 and finally 1.50. I ran into this many months ago with LRP, but
just blew it off back then. I tried both an IBM Auto 16/4 card, and
then a Turbo card. They're set to not use P&P, but specific IO ports
and IRQs. The kernel (either as a module, or compiled in) finds the
card just fine. It prints the IRQ, MAC address, etc. without a
problem. Only when I try to ifconfig it does it start all this trouble.
In the ibmtr.c file in the kernel, there is a #define to turn on
debugging messages, but they don't print anything. No errors in syslog,
not a single clue, really. :)
So, anyone else out there use one of these cards successfully? Or had
any similar problem, and hopefully were able to overcome?
Any clues would be most appreciated. This puts a sort of halt to the
old Linux in the business thing I hoped to accomplish.
Thanks
