I do not know what your real problem is but I can give you some hints...

1. Try to use encrypted passwords ("encrypt passwords = true" in [global])
2. Try to use another workgroup name. I'm not sure wether it is allowed.
3. Try to use user mode security ("security = user" in [global])

Generally, use testparam to test the integrity of your config file. For
example, my version of smb.conf man page tells about "share modes", not
"share mode"...
