Nothing, you just haven't set up ip masquerading. The addresses you use
are non-routable (RFC-1918) and as such, are not routed through the
internet. The slip box however does have a real ip, as assigned by your
IAP at connect-time (I'm guessing here). Your pings are never forwarded.

You need to set up ip masquerading. It involved a kernel recompile (if
support isn't already in it) and a rules setup - either through ipfwadm,
for 2.0.x (and early 2.1.x) - or through ipchains, for 2.1.bleed. There's
a minihowto on IP Masquerading covering ipfwadm, and ipchains includes a
nice howto on its own.
