I try to configure RedHat 6.0 with kernel 2.2.5-15.

With the correct netmask situation is the same. Now I have at the first host
(mars):

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:95:00:00:10
          inet addr:192.168.2.1 Bcast:192.168.2.15 Mask:255.255.255.240
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:24 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:5 Base address:0x320

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
          RX packets:118 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:118 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

At the second host (star):

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3584 Metric:1
          RX packets:266 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:266 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

eth0 Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:95:80:01:E3
          inet addr:194.247.138.97 Bcast:194.247.138.111
Mask:255.255.255.240
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:202634 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:204416 errors:23 dropped:0 overruns:0
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x320

eth0:0 Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:95:80:01:E3
          inet addr:192.168.2.8 Bcast:192.168.2.15 Mask:255.255.255.240
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

I've observed network with "tcpdump -i eth0"
1. ping from host 1(mars) to host 2(star)

18:01:39.013370 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:01:43.212724 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru

18:02:09.203416 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru

100% packet loss while ping.

2. ping from host 2(star) to host 1(mars)

18:05:09.013354 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:05:10.003412 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru

18:06:12.003763 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:19.013353 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:20.003855 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:29.013354 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:30.003406 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:39.013371 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru
18:06:40.003912 arp who-has star.accom.ru tell mars.accom.ru

100% packet loss while ping.

Both hosts are connected via bnc-connector with the cable. They reside one
near another. Local network 192.168.2.0 works OK during long period of time
with nearly 10 hosts.

Best regards,
Irina
