An other posibility with RH 5.2 upgraded at 2.2.x kernels it is that
net-tools package was NOT upgraded and that could cause also a behaviour
like that. The necessary upgrades are in:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/linux/redhat/updates/5.2/kernel-2.2/
( I found ftp.cdrom.com MUCH more responsive than RH own site)
ALL the packages in that directory must be instaled for proper working
with kernels > 2.2.0.
And of course check the 50 ohm terminators !!!
