OK you win. Using xf86config does minimize (eliminate?) the possible
failures but you can jump around in XF86Setup with TAB to set your
mouse.

... yeah, well, _I_ prefer to just hack my /etc/XF86Config by hand
anyway so there! *sniff sniff* Hello? Why is there smoke coming out of
my monitor? ;-)
