I've used the 2.1.131 kernel and am using the 2.2.9 kernel successfully
with pppd. There were some posts in coln that suggested earlier 2.2.x
kernels had a PPP problem but I don't know what kind of problem. The
2.2.10 kernel is the latest.

I'd check the modem device file configuration with setserial and see if it
looked OK. It's something that's not usually configured in pppd startup
scripts, although I don't really associate it with this kind of PPP
connection problem.
