Sorry, I figured it out.  Turned out to be
my receive buffer size was too small for the PPP link for some reason.
I increased it from IP_MSS (576) to 60*1024 which is what Stevens does.
Seemed to work, but if anyone has a suggestion on how large it should
really be for a null-modem link, please let me know.
