ADSL ping to gateway slow

   I just installed an ADSL line (384/128) with an 8 host subnet. Pings to
the subnet's gateway average around 530 ms. Pings to other ADSL hosts are
about the same (I'm just bumping up to the next subnet). Pings to the ISPs
mail server are about 30 ms. I expected to see between 20 and 30 ms to the
subnet gateway. Is there anything I could have done that would account for
this?
