I've been partial to Zoom modems, but there are many others. There are a couple of PCI 56K modems that work with Linux now. Externals are more expensive but usually preferred (easier to see status, less likely to be software driven). Whatever you decide, check the Linux compatibility database at http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html first. My opinions.
