Why would he not "get anywhere near the line speed (regardless of what
it is)?" The only basis for that is an assumption of massive
overselling of the bandwidth, which may, or may not, be the case. If
you're nearly 15 kft. away from the CO, you're typically only going to
be getting 256kbps or lower of bandwidth...bundling two such lines into
a logical 512kbps could be a real win (little to no improvement on
latency, but overall bandwidth would be improved). Even with the
overhead of multilink bundling, a Linux box of even halfway decent specs
should be able to push that (wasn't it you that was saying that a Linux
box could push HSSI at wire speed? ;)
