Assuming you have the userid and password correct, they
probably have telnet logins (i.e. shell accounts) disabled
for users. It might also be possible that the shell defined
in the passwd file is not allowing your login because it's
not defined or allowed for telnet (less likely).
It sounds like this is "your" server so you have control
over it? That makes things a bit easier. What distribution
is it? Depending on what distribution it is, you can look
at some configuration files in /etc and get a good idea as
to what is happening. This can all be done by logging in as
root from the console, assuming you have access to the console.
It's unlikely a problem with telnet. Try telnet'ing to port
80 and see if you can talk to the webserver:
telnet linuxbox 80
Enter a carriage return or something and you should get a response
from the webserver. If that doesn't work, try telnet'ing to a
well known server:
telnet www.ibm.com 80
and see if you get a response. This should verify that telnet is
running OK on your M$ box.
