Denis:

The service I use, TCI@Home (AT&T@Home, or whatever it's called now) just
provides you with a static IP, a cable modem, a ethernet card, and they
configure your Windows networking to use the appropriate values for the
gateway, DNS, and IP.

What I did was have a Windows box and had them do the alterations. I then
copied down all the values and then formatted the hard drive <insert evil
laugh here>, added a second ethernet card and started providing access to
all the other computers in the apartment through IP-masq.

All in all, very simple, no surprises. They'll even give you a 3Com
Etherlink III card. The bottom line is that it's all very
straightforward... well, at least here in Seattle, WA.

The catch is that from what I've heard, cable service varies wildly from
one region to another. The service I'm telling you about is pretty good,
but the provider in your region could also provide the shottiest service
in the US, so you never know. You should probably share what region you're
from so that if people in your area have some complaining to do, you'll
hear it.

Here are my questions though:

1) Why don't cable companies run OS-fingerprint utilities to keep people
from running Linux?

2) Do they care about whether or not you are running a IP-masq (or
equivalent) service?

3) Here in Seattle, we have a dumb arbitrary 256k up/down limit-- does
anyone have service that's just stunning in terms of performance?

4) Why is it that Linux is not supported? It seems that most people that
would be interested in broadband would be into it or some other *nix OS.

5) Does @HOME use UNIX for their internal stuff :)

Cheers,
Andrew
