Hello,

Your problem happened to me last week, I used 3c509 too and I got all the
symptom you got .... reinstalling was unsuccessful. After  having took a
look at this archive, I decided to give it a last chance (or I will switch
to the slack 4.0)... and it did work!
I think it was because of conflict and redhat just get confused ... but not
really sure
I put off all cards except the 3com ( I had ISDN, Video capture cards),
re-install RH6.0... and everything worked (the 3com card of course!).
Thereafter, I reinserted the two cards left and added them as loadable
modules...
In the same ciomputer, I use SCSI CDROM, Modem, soundcard and everything are
working well.

Does the NIC work in other boxes? Other ports?

That's because it's trying to resolve the hostname from the IP
address.  If there is anything that is preventing the reverse lookup
to fail, it will hang there waiting for a timeout. You can skip the
reverse lookups with the -n option on route
