Hope not to ruffle too many feathers with this off-topic question:
I need to start dual booting my Toshiba (4005CDS) laptop between
win/98 and RH 6.0, for something at work.
[Preliminary NOTE:... I have no way to backup my existing
linux setup, fully. Best I can do there is to send config files and
fdisk info + all of /etc to a remote machine via ppp connection over
the internet, anything more will take too long.]
The rescue/reinstall disk that came with the TOSHIBA can only
reinstall the factory setup with no other options possible. That is,
it can only format the whole drive and reinstall the win/98 factory
setup that was originally on it.
I want to reinstall windows on unused space using a full win/98 cd. I
have obtained the full win/98 install CD and boot floppy.
I have the space (1300MB). Current setup is like so:
/dev/hda1 is empty but was an ext2 partition and has now been deleted
using linux fdisk.
/dev/hda1 (now deleted)
/dev/hda2 extended to end of disk
/dev/hda5-hda10 logical partions containing current 6.0 install.
Using win/98 fdisk I created a dos partion and set it as active.
.......
LINUX fdisk now sees:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 326 1314400+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 327 993 2689344 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 327 644 1282144+ 83 Linux <=="/" (root)
/dev/hda6 645 720 306400+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 721 825 423328+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 826 876 205600+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda9 877 898 88672+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda10 899 993 383008+ 83 Linux
So far so good... Now starting the win/98 install. The setup routine
sees an unformatted C drive and wants to format it before continuing.
dos fdisk shows
C 1 active primary 33% used (don't know why 33% since it is empty)
2 extended 67% used ( my linux installation)
I'm afraid if I allow the setup routine to format, it will format both 1
and 2 above. (Including my Linux setup --- nooooo nooooo!)
Are there knowledgeable dos dual booters here who know what will happen
in above situation?
I need to be able to dual boot *NOW*. Is it possible to reinstall
win/98 without hosing my linux install?
