First off, you still might be able to back up your linux configuration.  

If you have an ethernet connection to a Windows network, then mount
a Windows directory like so:

smbmount '\\winmachine\sharename' -c 'mount /mountpoint -g 0 -u 0'

And archive your stuff to /mountpoint.

You can also just yank the drive, take it to another linux machine, plug it in, and 
tar it off.  It's still a material world, baby!

I just finished configuring 9 triple boot machines.  I don't see a problem with your 
configuration, though I'd definitely make an effort to back up your linux 
installation.  I don't think you need to worry as long as the linux and dos fdisks 
agree on the size and type of /dev/hda1.
