To check lag times:
ping your gateway continuosly for several minutes, look at the average
ping time, a modem should be around 120 - 180 mS
To check bandwith:
ping your gateway with different ( increasing ) packet sizes, until the
lag times start to increase, or packets begin to get dropped.
