Sounds to me (having done no thinking about it) like a pMTU discovery problem.
Actually, I'm not at all sure about that, but it's worth giving some thought
to if your desperate.

Look at what the server thinks the MTU you is, and then do some pings and 
traceroutes across the path to the clients with MTU-sized packets (allowing
for headers etc.).
