Hmmm.. I figured that the baud rate was probably restricted, it's a
70mHz SS5 so I think that the 78400 might be asking for trouble.

  However, @ 38400 the connection still has the problem I described [way
below]
Any ideas?

  Minicom issues modem setup strings: AT S7=45 X4 &c1 E1 S0=0
 I issue the dial command ATDT <blahblahblah>
 The modem dials, negotiates and comes back with a connect string 
  CONNECT <blahblahblah>/V42BIS
 At this point, I can type to my heart's content and there is no
response or indication that I have a connection. The modems are still
connected (it doesn't drop until it times out) I can not get a response.

  I have tried the same modem and setting string from a dumb ascii
terminal, with the same port settings; after the CONNECT string, I can
get authentication prompts and a PPP connection by hitting return.
