I'm guessing here that you have installed a standard distribution of Linux
like say, RedHat.
In that case Sendmail comes pre-installed and is in many cases ready to use.
It sends outgoing mail to other mailservers. If you want people to remotely
connect to your machine to check /send their mail, you'll need a pop3 or
imap daemon. Both are in the imap package which you can find on your
installation-cd in the rpms directory.
