Adding a hard disk

Hi guys,   I installed a new hard disk on my PC (HP , PIII 500Mhz, kernel 2.2.14, Mandrak 7.0 distribution)   when booting the system,  the new Hard disk is detected as hdc, but I don't know how to format it and I need to append it to my root director ( on hda5)   I tried to look at the HOWTOs but could not find anything that can help me.   Thanks for your help,   Eddy.
