Hello,
I am experiencing problems getting a D-Link 570E 4-port server NIC to work
under Linux. I'm trying to install it under Red Hat 6.0.
I have successfully ifup'd all four interfaces, eth0 through eth3. They
each get assigned an IP just fine. The routing setup appears to work
properly also.
But when I do a route, the static routes show up but the defaults do not.
route just hangs without displaying the default gateway(s).
I cannot see the network, period, on any interface.
Now for the peculiar behavior I've noticed. When I bring an interface up,
the link/activity light goes a mile a minute on the NIC and on the hub,
even when there is no network activity whatsoever. This happens on all
four interfaces. ifconfig reports that no packets have been transmitted or
received--so why are the activity lights doing this?
And, here's the kicker. When I ifdown an interface (i.e. ifdown eth0), the
activity lights stop going a mile a minute. They stay active, but when the
interface is down they only blink when there is network activity, as they
should.
I noticed something funny, though: when I ifup the interface again, for
about three seconds the link light keeps only blinking when there is
network activity, and then once again starts going a mile a minute on both
the card and the hub. No collisions appear on the hub, so I don't think
the card is transmitting anything--perhaps it's just taking the link up
and down four times a second? I don't know why, but that's all I can think
of.
Intrigued, I did this:
ifdown eth0 (the link light started reflecting network activity only)
ifup eth0;ping 209.136.218.1 (our gateway)
And for three seconds (about 6 packets) ping was able to see the gateway.
Then the pings stopped coming back and at the same time, the link light
once again started blinking like crazy.
Now, this is very strange, and I am at a complete loss. Can anyone help me
out here? This card has four 21143 chips and is essentially seen as four
DEC Tulip cards. It's a very standard driver, if I'm not mistaken.
What the heck is going on?
Thanks,
Matthew McCleary
