I have some questions about the traffic control subsystem of the Linux
operating system. I'm hoping someone will be able to at least point me in
the right direction for setting up a specific configuration. I have set
up some basic configurations before but our applications now are a little
more advanced and try as I might, I have been unable to get it to work.
Here is what we would like to do:
We would like to take a block of bandwidth...let's say 512Kbps...and have
several computers using this 512Kbps chunk, but no more. But rather than
just have all of the computers "fight" for bandwidth in that 512Kbps
chunk, we'd like to be able to say that each computer has 64Kbps high
priority. Although there couple be enough computers that the 64Kbps
segments could become more than 512Kbps, we'd like it to still cap at
512Kbps for those computers. But if the sum of the 64Kbps segments is
less than 512Kbps (or more specifically, the sum of the used portions of
the 64Kbps segments), then the computers could "fight" over the remaining
bandwidth in a low priority mode...perhaps with a controlled maximum for
each computer. We would then want a similar setup on the outbound as well
as the inbound traffic.
For example:
Total (512Kbps)
Slow (64Kbps Max)
Computer 1 (64Kbps / Burst: 64Kbps)
Computer 2 (64Kbps / Burst: 64Kbps)
Computer 3 (64Kbps / Burst: 64Kbps)
Computer 4 (64Kbps / Burst: 64Kbps)
Medium (256Kbps Max)
Computer 5 (64Kbps / Burst: 256Kbps)
Computer 6 (64Kbps / Burst: 256Kbps)
Computer 7 (64Kbps / Burst: 256Kbps)
Computer 8 (192Kbps / Burst: 256Kbps)
Fast (512Kbps Max)
Computer 9 (64Kbps / Burst: 512Kbps)
Computer 10 (64Kbps / Burst: 512Kbps)
Computer 11 (64Kbps / Burst: 512Kbps)
Computer 12 (64Kbps / Burst: 512Kbps)
Computer 13 (192Kbps / Burst: 512Kbps)
I've been completely unable to find a way to do this and spent
considerable time reading documentation (what I can find of it) and
experimenting. Any chance someone out there could point me in the right
direction for setting this up?
