It sounds like the other end is expecting a login dialog. It is striping
the parity bit off everything it echo's back. This is not unusual if the
other end is set up for user name/password validation instead of auto
detecting PPP. The timeout error message also points that way. Check
with your ISP about what they want. If they don't support Linux, check to
see if you need a login script when connecting from Windows.
