The "passive" parameter deals with authentication not with his problem.

He is getting the "serial line is not eight bits clean" message which
indicates that Linux is seeing characters echoed back to itself. Thus
ppp/chat never sees the correct sequence of events occuring during
dialup/logon.

Not sure if this is the right list but setting 'passive' in
/etc/ppp/options could help.
