by the way, i backed up the system using mondoarchive. also, the reason i'd rather not reinstall from scratch is that there an all-in-wonder video card, and other various drivers installed and working perfectly now. i am fairly certain i would blow at least a weekend reinstalling all of that and getting it to work (and weekends are hard to come by with a 2, 5, and 6-year old running about).
