Doom in X-Windows

I try to start linuxxdoom in X-Windows. There are a lot of errors like
this:
         Could not find lumpname[ds.......]
I unpacked the tgz-file in /usr/doom directory.

Then there is a error with the Color: it can only run with 256 colors.
But my X-Server (S3) only run with 16 bbp and 24 bbp.
I uses Virge 3d/DX grafic-card. With 8 bbp -> error.
