Be reassured that if your card can do 1024x768x24bpp under windong, then it
can certainly do that with XFree86.

Some quick checks:
- does using Ctrl-Alt-grey+ and Ctrl-Alt-grey- work to change your
  resolution?
- did you try starting X with "startx -- -bpp 24" to enable 24bpp modes?

(It's possible to set your favourite resolution/bpp modes as default in the
XF86config file - although it isn't immediately obvious exactly how to do
that).

With the S3 Trio64+ card, use the S3 driver. As I understand it, the SVGA
is a more generic driver and hasn't got the acceleration specific functions
for the S3 cards.

The X configuration programs often do a reasonable job, but are rather
brain-dead. Some of the commercial packages, like Metro-X and Inside-X
are better, but all that I've seen err on the side of being conservative.

The "problem" can be fixed in a number of ways:
- re-run the configuration program and choosing monitor specifications that
allow a wider range of modelines to work
- manually tweak the /etc/X11/XF86config (or whatever) file - which is most
often the most useful way to go.

Beware that if you set specifications outside the capabilities of your
video card and/or monitor, then you run a rick of damaging them.

Small point, but your query was probably more aptly directed at the
linux-x11 email list.

Also, it seems a pity that you are willing to post to such lists to ask for
help, but not willing to subscribe them so that you might give yourself an
opportunity to help others.

Anyway, good luck.

Cheers .
