Actually joe IS a Word Star editor. It is also a C code editor and
anything you want it to be. There is a file joerc, that you can put in
each login directory that tells joe how to be configured when you start it
in that directory.

When I write serious stuff I use joe for the words, and then use
LaTeX to add pictures and side bars and interesting type font. The Ctrl-k
and then a...z and others are hard to learn. But joe has good on-line
help. You call that with Ctrl-k h. When you quit use Ctrl-k x to save and
quit. Ctrl-q quits w/o saving what you did.

I hate to have saved messages cluttering up my directories. So I
tell joe to put the saved messages into a special directory. I kill all
that every 3 days with cron.

So this is why I use joe. And so should you.
