I'm pretty much a newbie myself, but just off-hand I'd say that the kernel
you are trying to compile is likely to be the problem.  The 2.1.xxx
kernels are development kernels, and they are not guaranteed to be stable
or to even compile.  You might be better served by trying a distribution
kernel like 2.0.35.

BTW, the development kernels are up to 2.1.125, according to the
linux-announce list.
